AI at the point of use

Patterns that make embedded AI usable, trusted, and adopted in day-to-day clinical practice.

Pattern

AI succeeds when it shows up exactly where the user already works—without changing their mental model of who is accountable.

What helps

  • Keep the UI small, contextual, and interruptible
  • Make uncertainty visible (and give a fallback)
  • Provide evidence cues (e.g., citations or supporting signals)
  • Design escalation: “when in doubt, do this”

What hurts

  • Asking users to leave the core system
  • Outputs without controls or traceability
  • Over-automation before trust is established
